Assistant Coach:

Matt Stember
This will be Jason's 7th year as head coach for the Wilson/Central Catholic Ski Team and 8th year with the team.  His ski racing background consists of 2 years with the University of Oregon Club Team, 4 years of high school racing in the Three Rivers League, and a few Mighty Mite races.  Highlights from Jason's racing career are a 7th place slalom and combined finish in the 1998 State Championships.

Jason is a level 100 USSA coach and is heavily involved with the OISRA as a member of the rules committee. Aside from his ski coaching and racing background, Jason has been an assistant coach for the Sheldon High School Track & Field program, a coach at the Steen's Mountain Running Camp (5 years), and also a member of the University of Oregon Track and Field program.

Jason is a graduate of the University of Oregon with a bachelors degree in Landscape Architecture.  He has worked with WHPacific here in Portland as a Landscape Architect since 2003.  Jason loves coaching & thanks to the support of his wife Lindsey he will continue as the head coach for this season and hopefully many more.
Tony Frey
This will be Tony's 4th year with the team. Tony has been skiing since he was about 4 years old. As a freshman at Wilsonville High School, he decided to join the ski team to have fun and for a chance to get up to the mountain more often. He raced throughout high school finishing 3rd in the 3-Rivers League his senior season while helping Wilsonville High earn 3rd place at the Oregon State Championships.

Throughout college, he volunteered his time as both a coach and a course worker on race days. His coaching background consists of 3 years as head coach of the Clackamas High School Ski Team (since 2004), with many state championship qualifiers.

As a coach of the CCHS/WHS ski team, I have two main goals:
First, I want to provide an opportunity to improve the student athlete’s individual skills, physical fitness, self-confidence and the understanding of ski racing. Secondly, I hope to teach the fundamentals of skiing so that the athletes can enjoy the sport of skiing throughout their lifetime.

Jason and Matt
Matt is fondly referred to as “OLD SCHOOL”.

This will be Matt’s 13th year coaching the Wilson & Central Catholic Ski Teams.  His racing experience includes Mighty Mites, Nastar, PNSA Elite, FIS GS and Slalom as well as placing 3rd in Giant Slalom at NCSA Nationals while racing for Oregon State.  He has also raced City League, Golden Rose and miscellaneous Pro Circuit.

Matt was also a Mountain Guide with the Mt. Bailey Snocats and he
has climbed and skied many of the Cascade Volcanoes.  A highlight for Matt was when he climbed and skied off the summit of Denali in Alaska in 1990.

Matt has coached Youth Basketball and Baseball for 15 years.  Because of his love of working with youth and of skiing Matt has provided many a beginning ski racer the coaching and encouragement to become better skiers and competitors while representing their individual schools and community.

Assistant Coach:
Melinda Borgens
This is Melinda's 2nd season coaching with our team.  Melinda first learned to ski in Idaho when I was 11 years old. She joined the Clackamas High School Ski Club as a freshman in 2001.  After spending two summers at Timberline’s Atomic Summer Ski Racing Camp, she raced her way to the top, placing 1st in GS & 3rd in SL at the end of the 2005 Three Rivers League season. At the Oregon State Championships, I placed within the top 50.

Melinda graduated from Oregon State University in 2009 with a BS in Environmental Science and BA in German, where I was also a member of Kappa Delta Sorority. Melinda worked as a ski instructor at Timberline during the 09' and 10' season. She now works for an international environmental consulting firm in the Portland area.

My main goal as a coach is to provide essential skills and techniques to each racer for them to succeed as individuals. In the end, I would hope that each is able to look back and be proud of his/her accomplishments, no matter the outcome…because if you’re not skiing, you’re not living!

Assistant/Dryland Coach:
Kelly LeCoq
Kelly raced for the Wilson Ski Team from 2003-2007. Ski team was a highlight of her high school experience. She continued to race in college for the University of Oregon’s club team. She recently graduated from the UO with a degree in Psychology and Spanish. Her goal is to become a 5th grade teacher; for this to become a reality she is pursuing a Master program in education.

Skiing is a passion for Kelly. She loves both racing and free skiing. She loved the competition of high school racing. She worked hard to place in the top 10 at the Oregon State Competition. Kelly is excited for the opportunity to pass her enthusiasm for ski racing onto this year’s high school racers. Being in good shape is an important part of seeing results in ski racing. She is excited to bring her love for working out into dryland practices. Kelly is making it her goal for athletes to benefit from these dryland practices.
